Amazing Tutors' Volunteers Bring Sunshine to the Lives of Others

New Year's Charitable Giving Gets a Boost to Deliver 1000 Sunshine Food Packages to People without Housing in the Downtown Vancouver Eastside

"May all the love you give away, comes back to fill your heart each day!"

When it comes to creating a culture of caring and new year's giving, we proactively engage everyone in maintaining a spirit of generosity. With the financial support of the local residents living in the surrounding area of Vancouver East End, Amazing Tutors' Children's Foundation was able to pack one thousand Sunshine Food Packages with an easy-to-peel mandarin orange, healthy juice box, muffin and a nut free chocolate bar. We then delivered these extreme weather response resources to Commercial Drive, Grandview, and the Downtown Vancouver Eastside to alleviate hunger.  This program is designed to provide time-limited, weather responsive, food packages during periods of extreme winter weather which threaten the health of individuals experiencing homelessness.  It builds compassion, connection, and a stronger sense of community among children and families while addressing hunger during inclement weather.  As our Foundation offers opportunities to develop leadership skills to youth attending our programs, the leadership of hundreds of these local families and caring residents astounds us. In a world that is broken, each one of us has the power to offer and restore hope within someone else. We are very gratified for the depth and breadth of community support and we appreciate everyone's generosity. We feel extremely blessed to have been given the opportunity by local families to engage with the community in such an important way, and to have youth in the community volunteering.  We lift our hands and hearts in deep gratitude, and we are honored and humbled by the opportunity to work with our youths and their families.

We value the support we receive from Vancouver's East End and we count ourselves fortunate to live in a community with considerable compassion and care for those in need.  As part of our new year's charitable giving, we also delivered some of these resources in front of the Carnegie Library, Gospel Union, Atira Women's Resource Society and Oppenheimer Park. Oppenheimer Park was originally opened in 1902 as the Powell Street Grounds by Vancouver's second mayor, David Oppenheimer in the Downtown Eastside. The park's facilities include a softball field, a basketball hoop, a children's playground, and a community center with bathrooms, meeting space, and public computer access. The park employs two full-time activity coordinators and several part-time staff. Today, Oppenheimer Park is a safe haven for First Nations people of Canada, campers and local residents without housing.

Service Providers Bring Sunshine to DTES

Health and support services are provided by local charities. The Union Gospel Mission is determined to restore the God-given dignity of people by sharing and demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ without discrimination.  They provide meals, shelter, outreach and chaplaincy services that relieve suffering and renew hope.  They operate affordable housing and life recovery programs that offer freedom from addictive lifestyles. Education and job preparation programs equip program participants for successful living.  These preventive programs help to build healthy families in a world that is broken by poverty and addiction, and they do this by coming alongside men, women, and children to provide a hand up towards hope and recovery. What started as a small sense of hope-filled purpose, stemming from Bob Stacey, has grown, shifted, and evolved to bring that same hope to so many men, women, and children since 1940. Today, UGM serves over 3500 meals at its annual Christmas dinner, and over 320,000 meals annually.  They have expanded their programs and services significantly and grown to fill seven locations throughout Metro Vancouver and the City of mission.  With dedicated, visionary leadership and a united faith in God's provision, UGM is determined to transform communities by overcoming poverty, homelessness, and addiction --one life at a time.

Atira Women's Resource Society is dedicated to supporting women and children affected by violence by offering safe and supportive housing and by delivering education and advocacy aimed at ending all forms of gendered violence.  Atira provides a range of services not only in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside (DTES) but also in the Lower Mainland.  Atira is accessible to anyone who identifies and lives full time as a woman and who experience gendered violence and misogyny.  Services offered include long term housing, transitional housing and shelter programs. Professional outreach services are given to First Nations, Metis, Inuit and women who are older and affected by violence. Their Family Project provides support for children who witness abuse and parenting support for the family unit. Atira Women's Resource Society also provides legal advocacy, counselling, and self-employment initiatives such as the Painter Sisters Painting Company and Enterprising Women Making Art.

The Powell Street Getaway serves at a Vancouver Coastal Health funded Mental Health and Substance Use community resource center.  They offer a safe consumption site, peer-lead programs, meals, activities and supports for anyone who may need them.  The expansion of services is designed to create the space as a hub where many services are offered, with particular emphasis on supporting health referrals and outcomes.  Service providers and and their staff actively refer people in need to the Connections Clinic, operated by Vancouver Coastal Health, which is across the street.

These programs will continue Vancouver's evolution to serve the changing needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized people in the Downtown Eastside and will have a greater health focus which includes new programming for seniors, addicts, women, LGBTQ and aboriginal communities. Essentially, a myriad of new initiatives are being put in place to try and revitalize the DTES and increase positive outlook towards the area. Together, we can all participate in a caring, giving and supportive community and create a world of caring and consideration in our local community.

Helping those Less Fortunate Fosters Opportunity for Compassion and Caring for At-Risk Families and Youth

As our human nature continues to evolve, so do our cultural ideas of community and family.  The growing diversity of people that compose our society creates a greater range of challenges and opportunities.  Building communities of caring, compassion, empathy and change requires that we look beyond ourselves and attempt to reach out to those in need.  Regardless of background, we all have remarkable qualities that must be nurtured for our full potential to be reached.  We believe that our students deserve the chance to realize, believe in, and achieve their full potential.

At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we create environments that foster our students' ability to participate in a caring and giving community.  Building connections to community and family, forging bonds of trust, and teaching self-improvement and accountability are the principles we impart in our programs designed to provide leadership training for at-risk youth.  We encourage our students to reflect on their interactions, to help them understand the value of compassion, empathy, caring, and to use their new awareness to help in the communities they live in.  Our community outreach programs reflect our values.  Providing food, caring, compassion, and kindness helps to build people up, and gives birth to a sense of community for all involved.  We strive to work with a variety of charitable organizations to reach as many people as possible.  We each have a stake in our community's health, and by including at-risk youth, we create the potential for a brighter future for our community.
Our mentorship program helps at-risk youth learn valuable leadership skills.  They learn and establish a greater sense of connection to their community and to the people in their lives.  These avenues provide students with confidence, empathy, which helps them form deep and meaningful relationships, and helps them realize their full potential as members of a caring and giving community.

"It is important to build trust and meaningful relationships between people.  We are determined to foster friendship and understanding from a variety of different backgrounds and worldviews to make our world a better and safer place to live," says the founders on our team.

The Amazing Tutors' Children's Foundation seeks to build communities by supporting youth and children through educational and volunteer opportunities.  If your organization depends on volunteer contributions of time, and you would be interested in discussing our foundation's Community Outreach Program, please contact us today.

Our Youth Leadership Development Program

At our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, our Youth Leadership Development Program instill in students a sense of bravery and resourcefulness by taking action for a better world.  Our students strengthen their leadership capabilities by organizing events and teaching each other new development skills. Our LEAD programs include leadership, education, and development programs that substantially benefit our community. Amazing Tutors develops proactive events that address and develop a range of skills and abilities. These include: academic coaching, mentoring, self-esteem, relief of poverty, advancement of education, religion, charitable works and fundraising. Students test their limits as they push themselves to overcome obstacles and achieve new goals.  Our students identify issues of importance, and take action on them to make an impact on their community through service and fundraising projects.

Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation believes in engaging in Programs for Youth that build character, increase self-esteem and, develop life skills.  Social development plans provide both children and teens with positive peer interactions, opportunities to develop problem-solving skills and positive adult support. In turn, these help reduce the risk factors associated with juvenile offenders. Though not the complete solution to stopping negative behaviors, organized sports and development programs can contribute to their reduction by giving young people a positive identity, feelings of empowerment and by helping youth acquire leadership, teamwork, and self-governance skills under adult supervision.

At our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we support collaboration and partnerships among students, educational professionals, business leaders, and the community at large.  We focus resources to ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their highest potential in school, career, and in life.  Amazing Tutors offers a wide range of exercises and extracurricular activity for our students and their families. The variety of Amazing Tutors' programming and opportunities gives students equal prospect to develop leadership skills that help them navigate their world with confidence.  We seek to increase students' awareness about their world, by promoting cross-cultural understanding and educating them on issues that will stimulate them to take action to build a caring, giving community. We believe that developing, discovering, empowering, engaging, and challenging students represents the core values of the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation.  We are honored and humbled by the opportunity to work with our youths and their families.

Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation Celebrates the Launch of the We Are Newton Anthology

"We believe that developing, discovering, empowering, engaging, and challenging students represents the core values of the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation."    - Our founders

The "We Are Newton" neighbourhood anthology launch party took place this Sunday, November 20th. The purpose of the event was to bring people from diverse backgrounds and worldviews together to affirm our collective commitment to building unity and understanding in our community.

The We Are Newton neighborhood anthology would not have been possible without the contributions of the many residents and former residents of Newton who shared their memories and positive stories of our ever changing, vibrant community.  The book aims to show what it really means to live, work and play in Newton, Surrey.

Diana Joy, a writer based in Newton, reflected on why the We Are Newton project is important to her. "When you see the television news the only stories you hear about Newton are the shootings and murders," said Joy.  "There are other stories, lots of them.  Stories of families and neighbours and kindness and surprises."
David Dalley, the project coordinator and a community advocate, came up with the idea that the first book to go into the Little Free Library for the Friends of the Grove should be a book about Newton. "We initially thought we might have enough for a little chapbook that we would staple together and give out, but it is an actual book.  We are happy with the results. The goal is to be generous with (copies of the book), to give them away to anyone who wants one, so people will always be able to access it there."

In an interview with Zee TV, Sikandar Hayat, a director from our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation and the former President of the B.C. Liberal Surrey-Newton Riding Association, reflects on why the foundation lent a hand: "While Newton has recently been in the news for shootings, robberies and theft, projects like the We are Newton Anthology show what Newton is really all about.  There are poems, fiction and non-fiction stories written by local residents.  These stories uplift the morale of the local community, show a positive side of Newton, and give us more reasons to be proud of being a great part of Surrey, B.C.  The launch of this book gave us another venue to be together and celebrate our unity.  Newton is not perfect, however, it is getting better and we are proud to live here."

Ellen Niemer, the project editor, reflected on the role of the neighborhood contributors:  "To outsiders, Newton may look like an ordinary stone: a place with problems, a place with a bad reputation, a place that people fear, but we know that Newton is a beautiful place.  Sharing our stories helps us to get to know each other personally, to build connections and a sense of community.  Especially in these uncertain times when we hear far too many negative messages of intolerance.  The time is right to reach out and get to know each other.  Timing is everything, and I believe the We Are Newton Anthology could not have been released at a better time."

The Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation appreciates the We Are Newton project team:  David Dalley, Ellen Niemer, Norm Bain, Parm Cruikshank, Diana Joy and Diane Archer, Steve Webster, Katheren Szabo and Friends of the Grove team for building community unity within our city. The We Are Newton Anthology is a great way to collect positive stories about Newton that can be shared with the entire community. Thank you, Friends of the Grove and our directors, for providing the opportunity for all of us to participate in a giving and caring community.

Diana Joy and David Dalley's quotes were taken from the article "Neighbourhood anthology will tell the real stories of Newton."  It was written by Amy Reid in the Nowpaper posted on September 14, 2016.  Watch the video below:  "We Are Newton" on CBC's News Vancouver at 6 and The Early Edition with Rick Cluff.

Amazing Tutors, Canex Building Supplies Ltd. and Surrey Urban Mission Society work to accelerate urgently needed progress for children from economically challenged families

Back-to-school success begins with Amazing Tutors and Canex Building Supplies Ltd.  Bruce Kehler Gives $25 000 for Back-to-School Supplies

Last month, Bruce Kehler, CEO of Canex Building Supplies Ltd. of Chilliwack, helped make the back-to-school season a whole lot brighter for over 100 Surrey and Whalley students.  He announced an incredible back-to-school donation of $25 000 in the form of $250 gift cards to the Surrey Urban Mission Society Day Camp Adventures students.  These funds will help to accelerate urgently needed progress for children from economically challenged families.

This announcement was made at The Surrey Urban Mission Summer Camp closing ceremony, which took place at Surrey Urban Mission on August 20, 2015.  A spectacular variety show was organized by Jonquil Hallgate, which featured live music, with campers singing songs, performing skids, dances and playing the piano.  The celebration atmosphere was over the top.  The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Jinny Sims, Sue Hammell, Bruce Ralston, and Jasbir Sandhu.  The campers, camp leaders, and their parents were there to thank the organizers for a highly successful summer camp season.  In particular, they gave special thanks to Bruce Kehler, who had also sponsored the entire camp with his previous $25 000 donations.

Some children from well-to-do families get to go to summer camp every year.  Those who come from poor families never get to go.  For many children, the new school year means new clothes and all the new school supplies that they need.  For children living below the poverty line, the reality is very different.  Financial budgets are tighter, and parents often must focus on basic needs like food and shelter.  This leaves very little extras such as new school supplies.  Children without school supplies have lower attendance rates and do poorly, which leads to higher dropout rates.  Teachers often use their own money to buy these children supplies. A report from the Surrey Poverty Coalition says there are 20 000 children and youth living in poverty--more than anywhere else in the province.

Kehler credits his new relationship with SUMS to Sikandar Hayat, a director of Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, who introduced him to SUMS.  Bruce believes that "sometimes a few hundred dollars stands in the way of a chance and a child, and all children should have the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential."  The Amazing Tutors Childen's Foundation greatly appreciates Bruce and Georgina Kehler's generous contributions to the summer camp and for the back-to-school gift cards.

For youth, educational attainment and the development of a positive identity, feelings of empowerment, leadership, teamwork, self-governance and life skills are critical to future employment readiness.  Make Amazing Tutors a part of your summer schedule, and make back-to-school time an enormous success.  Your incredible child has the ability to amaze you with how much he or she can learn at summer  camp or at any or our Amazing Tutors' community-based tutoring centers.

Giving with a Heart, Mind, and Spirit --A Tribute to Bruce Kehler, the Man with the Heart of Gold

Your Handful of Spiritual Jewels

There is no one exactly like you, my friend.

Whether it is your charitable smile, or the modesty on your face,

Everything that radiates out of you is purely and authentically yours.

Whether it is the piety in your heart, or the diligent work in your hands,

It all belongs to you.

You own every thoughtful action and gentle feeling,

And the soft song that comes from your voice.

Whether they be for others or yourself, you own your aspiring dreams,

Your inspiring hopes and difficult fears.

At any given moment, you own your mistakes, unforeseen failures, rising successes, heart-felt triumphs

And all that surely belongs to you.

You own the jewels of being spiritually you.

You own the blue sapphire of patience, which allows you to cope with worldly difficulties.

You own the green emerald of compassion, which directs you to be sensibly close and kind to others.

You own the amethyst of kindness, which lifts your doling hand to give and help those in need.

You own the sparkling diamond of vision which guides you to make sense and order out of this world of toil.

No one can take away your spiritual free will and your own self-determination.

No one can take away your alexandrite of underlying strength.

No one can do a rather more graceful and better job of being you,

So thank you, my friend, for being authentically you.

Thank you, my friends, for supporting and being with us.

Thank you, my friends, for providing opportunities for all children to be in a giving, caring community.

Bruce Kehler April 19, 1952- April 21, 2017

Family always meant everything to Bruce.  Many lives have been touched by the kind soul of Bruce Kehler.  To many people, he was known as the Lumber Magnate, Monumental Mentor, Charismatic Coach, White Man with a Brown Heart, Larger Than Life, Unselfish Giver, and a Paramount Patriarch. Bruce had a nickname for everyone, to define Bruce...nothing short of Inspirational.  In true Bruce style, a quick quote:  No beauty shines brighter than that of a big heart.  Thank you, Bruce, for your compassion and generosity to our community.

At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we believe that social change begins with instilling hope, confidence building, and leadership planning. The strength of a community is in the well-being of people who live there.  When you give your time or a donation to our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, you are building a stronger community, which supports our development, and keeps us connected, healthy and strong. Our foundation enables our youths to be brave, confident, and resourceful by taking action for a better world.  Essentially, we can kindly do for future generations what our parents and grandparents have done for us.  We can invest in our communities and take care of families and our children together.  We can change the odds by working and paving a brighter future for Surrey children.

Amazing Tutors, Ride2Survive, and the Friendship Boulevard Foundation make Summer Giving Easy on Father's Day

June 19, -- When it comes to creating a culture of caring and summer giving in Surrey, we proactively engage everyone in maintaining a spirit of generosity. With the support of Ride2Survive,  Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation and the Friendship Boulevard Foundation packed 500 pounds of fresh food in three vehicles. We then delivered these shared resources of bananas, grape tomatoes, fruit salads, nuts, oranges, spinach, strawberries and juice boxes to OPTIONS Community Services Hyland House (Homeless Outreach Program), Friendship Village, and to a few immigrant Syrian families.  As our Foundation offers opportunities to develop leadership skills to youth attending our programs, this event showcases nonprofit organizations working together for the greater good of our community.

Here at our Foundation, we believe in a spiritual, sacred worth of all people.  In order to serve our community with kindness, we continually develop resources and intelligent programs that substantially benefit our community. We recognize the importance of serving people in caring ways. We sincerely desire to provide opportunities to create a caring, giving and inclusive community. Our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation encourages everyone to honor the strength of diversity within their communities by bringing together an array of diverse perspectives in ways that foster collaboration, community, reflection and action.

Kindly join us in our charitable expressions to our community. We ask for the privilege to walk on a sacred path which leads to happiness for all, which ultimately reflects the grace, beauty and potential of humanity. We aim to lead people to beauty, fortitude, kindness, and well-being, which make the world a more divine place.  Amazing Tutors commits to working together with communities in our region to support the education and health promotion efforts through shared leadership and action. Together, we can make this process collaborative, enhancing, practical, proactive, responsible and welcoming.

We offer many thanks to Ride2Survive and Jonquil Hallgate for their long-standing dedication, excellence and generosity to our community. We feel extremely blessed to have been given the opportunity by Ride2Survive, Friendship Boulevard, Friendship Village and Option's Hyland House to engage with the community in such an important way, and to have youth in the community volunteering.  At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we believe in providing our students with positive and community based volunteer activities.  Through these actions, we provide an essential part of their development growing into responsible and capable citizens.

FOUNDATION: COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM GIVING AND PACK THE VANS FOOD DRIVE

We Generate More Opportunities for Families to benefit in Our Community

Amazing Tutors, Friendship Boulevard Foundation, The Whalley Legion, 'Pack the Vans Food Drive.'

More than 2,000 pounds of food was collected in support of local non profits and charity programs during the Friendship Boulevard Foundation's Inaugural Christmas Day Breakfast and Pack the Vans Food Drive event.

The Amazing Tutor's Children's Foundation would like to thank the Friendship Boulevard Foundation for organizing the 18th Annual Hearty Christmas Day Breakfast at the Whalley Legion and for their Pack the Vans Food Drive event. They made the holidays a whole lot brighter for those in need in our community.

The Friendship Boulevard Foundation has been involved in holiday-themed activities this past month to help spread kindness and holiday cheer in the city. This included community volunteers organizing a generous breakfast for over a hundred people who participated in this event, organizing a toy drive for children, and collecting warm clothing for those in need in Whalley.  Delivering food to the Surrey Food Bank, OPTIONS Community Services Hyland House (Homeless Outreach Program), Friendship Village, and the Sur-Del Easy Does It Society (Drug and Alcohol Rehab), they are helping to sustain our social and housing services in Surrey.  As part of their New Year's Giving, the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation will help to deliver fresh vegetables and non-perishable foods to individuals and families needing support in Whalley and Newton.

"We continue to urge Surrey residents to give back to the community in whatever way they can. We can all help to develop and grow local poverty reduction efforts by increasing opportunities for collaboration," said Jonquil Hallgate, President of the Friendship Boulevard Foundation. "Our Foundation creates innovative solutions to address community wellness in hopes of alleviating poverty and to create opportunities for housing, health and support services to further address an array of community needs."

The Friendship Boulevard Foundation thanks their neighbors and guests in the Whalley community who struggle with great challenges and adversity each day and provide opportunities to be part of a giving, caring community.  For more information about getting involved, volunteering or donating, please email us.

A Kind Word from the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation

Amazing Tutors and Sullivan Pharmacy work to take care of the Medical Needs of the newly arrived Syrian Children and their Families

School success begins with Amazing Tutors and Sullivan Pharmacy in Connecting Families to Quality Care

On February 3, more than twenty Syrian families with young children received a medical pack with over-the-counter pharmaceutical products to help them deal with the flu season.  We recognized that these young immigrant families face many health issues, and in many cases did not have financial access to medical care.  Arriving from Syria, they face challenges related to education, language barriers, lifestyle and social isolation.  But many of them also face more urgent health challenges and needs, such as cold and flu prevention, and adapting to the cold Canadian winter climate.  Working in collaboration with Sullivan Pharmacy, we are committed to giving back to our community by seriously addressing those medical needs.

The Sullivan Pharmacy is a new independent pharmacy dedicated to contributing to the community with their outstanding services. They are comprised of health care professionals who wish to make a greater health difference in people's lives. Sullivan Pharmacy provides pharmaceuticals, private consultations, and mobile health services, with the immediacy that a client requires. They offer a wide array of medicines and products with national health certification. Their staff are available to advise on administration, dosage and usage for each product, whether it is pharmaceuticals, or dietary supplements, elements of sampling, and special medical devices. The staff at Sullivan Pharmacy are happy to help clients solve their health needs and supply them with the medications they require in a timely manner. Please see below for their phone number, address, and e-mail. The Amazing Tutor’s Children’s Foundation greatly appreciates Sullivan Pharmacy's generous contributions to help our community advance and progress. Together we can all help families meet the challenges that lie ahead.    -Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation

A Kind Word from our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation

The  Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation thanks Sullivan Pharmacy for providing quality health care in the community, and for giving back through their charitable involvement.  We are grateful for their donation of time and medical resources to our Foundation. This project is one example of the kind of commitment that contributes to our community's success.  We support and promote the equality of all children, and we value the rich diversity and vibrancy of the communities that we serve, recognizing that this diversity brings it different learning styles, beliefs and values.  We believe that all children and their families should be celebrated for their unique abilities and contributions.

Amazing Tutors Inc. runs community-based tutoring centers, dedicated primarily to tutoring programs and services in Surrey and White Rock.  At the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we support children and their families to develop new skills and gain a sense of belonging, with the understanding that they are in the process of building their foundation for success as a healthy, productive member of the community.

In the overall picture, we know well that children who are not well do not learn well.  Being mindful of this, we recognize that children's health needs must be taken care of first.  Consequently, together with Sullivan Pharmacy, we are committed to providing a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment of inclusiveness, respect and compassion for all families and their children we work with.

FOUNDATION: COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR ABORIGINAL YOUTH

Educating all children is important to a rich and blossoming community!

Aboriginal Education Services in Surrey B.C. for a Flourishing Community

Being based in Surrey, B.C., Amazing Tutors recognizes that we are living and working upon the unceded traditional territory of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, and Kwantlen First Nations.  Amazing Tutors extends our sincere thanks and gratitude to the First Peoples whose ancestral land we are on.

Since its foundation, Amazing Tutors has had one goal:  to develop the potential of all children through education and opportunity.  We understand that not every parent has the sufficient financial resources to access the education that their children truly deserve.  At Amazing Tutors, however, we care about every child, whether they are from a family that is rich or poor, and regardless of their culture, background,  religion, potential learning difficulties, and unique circumstances. That is why Amazing Tutors assumed a caring and supportive role providing superior tutoring programs and tutoring services for all children, all offered at a rate that is affordable to parents. Our roster of talented tutors in Surrey, B.C., provide professional tutoring services for various age groups and subjects, including English, math, science, and even writing.  Moreover, B.C. certified teachers and Ph.D. holders working with Amazing Tutors have crafted various levels of age-appropriate material for our students to progress in learning English and math.  Amazing Tutors is extremely blessed with the opportunity to work in partnership with the government.  Amazing Tutors is grateful to be a service provider for the Ministry of Children and Family Development and work tirelessly to ensure that every student has a chance to study with us.

With this acknowledgement, Amazing Tutors understands that not all children come from similar backgrounds with equal opportunities.  In Surrey, B.C. alone it is estimated that 1 in 5 residents live in poverty.  Statistics show that of all the children living in poverty in British Columbia, visual minority, Aboriginal, and immigrant children are each over-represented among the impoverished. These children comprise a significant number of those living below the poverty line.  It is difficult to prioritize education when poverty is a barrier; children who struggle at home as such unfortunately have a harder time with school.  To alleviate this stress on B.C. families, the non-profit Amazing Tutors' Children's Foundation provides relief to them through programs involving, but not limited to, education through tutoring.  Amazing Tutors develops proactive events that address and develop a range of skills and abilities.  These events include:  academic coaching, mentoring, self-esteem, poverty relief, advancement in education advancement, religious instruction, charitable works, and fundraising.

A core value of Amazing Tutors and Amazing Tutors' Children's Foundation is creating a strong sense of community and unity. One step Amazing Tutors is taking towards that goal is extending our reach to the Aboriginal children and youth of Surrey, B.C. Amazing Tutors can help Aboriginal parents and their children obtain the requisite funding for tutoring services and increase their access to educational resources.  Amazing Tutors’ Children’s Foundation strives to provide  appropriate tutoring services and tutoring programs for all children helping your child achieve better grades and preparing them for long-term success throughout their life.  Amazing Tutors is focused on building each student's confidence, igniting intellectual curiosity, and inspiring within them a commitment and love for learning, whether in our community-based tutoring center or through online tutoring. Moreover, Amazing Tutors provides individualized, personal support which will help your child truly grasp difficult concepts. Our caring teachers and expert tutors are good at encouraging and motivating children to learn, grow, and flourish over time. These attributes make a stronger impact in school and in life. No matter what your family’s needs are, Amazing Tutors’ Children’s Foundation can help. Amazing Tutors has affordable and flexible options, offering in-person tutoring within our community-based tutoring center in Surrey and online tutoring via the Zoom video conferencing, so learning can fit into your schedule. Amazing Tutors believes that education is a way to contribute to a strong community and hope to create an environment where Aboriginal learning and tutoring services can be provided to these precious children and youth.

The integration of Aboriginal history and culture into school curricula is mandatory and is rightfully a top priority in classrooms across Canada today. It is important, then, that Amazing Tutors provide a pathway for Aboriginal students to learn about their rich culture and background, while also excelling in their core classes such as English, math, and science. Amazing Tutors seeks to nurture a life-long zest for learning and to give students the tools with which to succeed though out life. More recent statistics show that Aboriginal youth are now graduating high school at higher rates than ever before. Educating Aboriginal children and youth--indeed all children and youth--is essentially to building a rich and blossoming community, for the present and for the future to come. Tutoring, whether in our Surrey, B.C. based learning center and online, makes a difference for all children.  Amazing Tutors' tutors are eager to serve all children who seek assistance with their class material.

With clarity, conviction, and concern, Amazing Tutors is addressing the tutoring and educational needs of our Surrey, B.C. community and shaping the solutions that will attempt to bridge the achievement gap between children from differing socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.  Amazing Tutors hopes that you will work with us to give your child(ren) these benefits, beginning with improving their academic standing.  Amazing Tutors' tutors in Surrey, B.C. and online are available to expertly address the academic needs of your child(ren)'s present and future.

A Kind Word about our Friend --the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Center

The development of what became known as the Friendship Center Movement began in the mid-1950s, when many First Nations people began migrating to urban settings to pursue better opportunities by developing life-skills, fulfilling their dreams, and finding a safer life. A few of these Friendship Centers initially developed in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. These Friendship Centers were formed across Canada to represent the interests of Indigenous peoples migrating from outlying reserves and Metis Settlements to urban areas. These early non-profit, local volunteer-run agencies served several important purposes at the time: they offered a community place for the first waves of First Nations people to find and gather with their peers, offered what programs and services they could with the little, if any funding, they received, were a referral agency, and built a strong network of supports with other organizations through their advocacy work. The types and number of supports that Friendship Centers wanted and needed to offer began to grow as more First Nations people arrived in cities and their needs expanded.

The Government of Canada established the Migrating Native Peoples Program, which is known today as the Aboriginal Friendship Centers Program. In 1996, administrative responsibility for this program was transferred out of government hands to the National Association of Friendship Centers (NAFC). The NAFC notes that their member organizations employ over 2,000 people and provide programs and services in the areas of “culture, family, youth, sports and recreation, language, justice, housing, health, education, employment, economic development and a variety of miscellaneous projects ranging from soup kitchens and food banks to administration and operational activities." The government of Canada acknowledges that Friendship Centers provide “a wide range of culturally appropriated programs and services directed at improving the lives and strengthening the cultural identity of urban Aboriginal people.” This statement is validated by the NAFC’s estimate of almost one million visits to Friendship Centers in 2010 alone. Today there are more than 100 centers across Canada. The Institute on Governance’s 2008 evaluation of Friendship Centers reported that there are six common threads of a successful Friendship Center:

  • They have both strong leadership and a strong Board of Directors.
  • They have a clear strategic plan and evaluation processes that are regularized, ongoing, and followed-up.
  • They have formal structures that are adhered to, but that also allow a degree of flexibility to respond to emerging needs and trends.
  • They effectively manage their dual role of service delivery and advocacy.
  • Their structures, policies, and working atmosphere are based on First Nations values such as transparency, accountability, respect, and client-based service, inclusion of youth and Elders alike, and they see the First Nations community as both client and advisor, and the board of directors and staff view themselves as members of that same community.
  • They actively seek funding, diversify their funding sources, and have shown entrepreneurial success.

The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Center Association (FRAFCA) provides a place for indigenous people to gather, cultivate culture, and engage in their community. The FRAFCA benefit the health and well-being of Aboriginal people, young and old, and nurture a strong sense of belonging and guidance through their numerous programs.

The FRAFCA's programs include cultural nights for all ages, early education, support for expecting mothers and infants, children, and youth, and a youth group for indigenous teens. The FRAFCA's attitude towards their bright youth is apparent even in the naming of their program: "Our Future Leaders." Recognizing this, the FRAFCA builds up an important cultural backbone allowing indigenous youth to gain a strong sense of self and a strong connection to their heritage, thereby developing aboriginal leadership for the future.

The FRAFCA are committed to creating a home for the Aboriginal community off-reserve by offering cultural events suitable for all ages. They show their community devotion, compassion, and generosity through their outreach while striving to preserve their native languages and traditions that may otherwise be lost. This is all with one goal in mind: to improve the lives of urban Indigenous people. Education and employment help also plays an important role in the FRAFCA approach to uplifting the community. Aboriginal art installations contribute to our community in a stunning way, representing the resilience and strength of the First Nations within the wider Surrey, B.C. community.

The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Center Association has already made great strides towards preserving traditional teachings, bringing together and engaging families within the community, and bolstering their youth for their future. The FRAFCA is deserving of recognition for their kindness, diligence, and hard work within the Aboriginal community and is a leader in mending and uplifting the lives of those who attend their events.

Today, the Friendship Center Movement is the country’s most significant off-reserve Indigenous service delivery infrastructure. For over half a century Friendship Centers have helped urban Indigenous people access the vital services they need to succeed in urban settings across Canada. Friendship Centers understand the challenges facing our communities and their unique “wrap-around” service delivery model ensures that they are well equipped to tackle them. Across the country, Friendship Centers provide culturally appropriate services for Indigenous people living in urban centers and have become a place for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together, to share traditions and to learn from one another. The FRAFCA's work within the community is appreciated by those within it, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike; we must recognize the importance of lifting our First Peoples and empowering them for a brighter and more unified future for all.    Discover a Tribal Canoe Journey

Programs for Children

We know that not all families can afford tutoring.  To address this need, the founders of our non-profit society created the Amazing Children's Program  to provide tutoring access for families with financial difficulty. At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation we are all inclusive, welcoming students from all ethnic backgrounds and religions. In Surrey, we have also had extensive experience with remedial and immigrant children.  Depending on available seats, Amazing Tutors Inc. offers free tutoring to welfare families, and considers half-price payment for certain low-income couples or single parents, seeing this as our company's moral and social responsibility - due to our belief in offering every student the best education possible.  This is also why we provide to everyone superior tutoring programs at an affordable price. Those eligible are able to receive support directly through this program. We are thankful to the management of  Amazing Tutors Inc. and Amazingcopywriters for their generous support in making this program a reality. Please call us for a free consultation.

Every child deserves the best education. Therefore, the Amazing Children's Program enables parents  to overcome financial barriers to tutoring by establishing a sliding scale for fees.  The result of this system is that no student is turned away due to financial need.  Our B.C. certified teachers, talented tutors, and our Ph.D. and our other Graduate students run this program for all students at Amazing Tutors Inc., while our active team of volunteers provides additional support with the operation of free and low-cost community events for youth and families.

Amazing Community-based Learning Centers and Online Learning

An Amazing Tutor's community-based learning center is a creative space that provides students with a unique opportunity to engage in activities that enrich and reinforce their learning.  Our amazing learning centers give all students access to art supplies, books, computers and manipulative learning tools that provide a real hands-on learning experience.  Our learning centers present students with the opportunities for confidence and teamwork building, hands-on learning, social interaction, real-life problem solving and to work on a myriad of open-ended activities. Inside our learning centers, we are governed by standards and rules that students understand, and require them to be responsible and accountable for their own learning.  Essentially, students who need more time to internalize information can highly benefit from our creative learning centers because our centers provide a more individualized lesson than a whole-class setting.
We help our students:

  • achieve academic success
  • awaken their unique talents
  • develop confidence, enthusiasm and a strong passion for learning
  • discover the joy of learning
  • encourage independent thinking and creativity
  • foster the will and self-motivation to learn

FOUNDATION: COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR FAMILIES

We provide volunteering opportunities for youth and their families to participate in a giving and caring community

Programs for Families

"We believe every child deserves the opportunity to belong, to develop and learn, and to participate in a giving and caring community.  That is why, our Family Resource Programs recognize and respect the multicultural nature of their communities and follow practices that promote compassion, honesty, respect and tolerance."

At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we value your time, enthusiasm and passion.  Our volunteers enjoy meeting and working with like-minded people committed to alleviating poverty in our local community.  Volunteering as a family offers an opportunity to discover and enhance your strengths and talents while increasing your social and professional network.  No matter how you become involved with us, you can rest assured that you will be making a difference in the lives of others as well as your own.

In December, we collaborated with the Interfaith Food and Clothing Ministry Team and the Lookout Emergency Aid Society.  As part of their 6th Annual Christmas Special Interfaith Food Distribution Program, they collected funds from twenty families.  Every winter, they continue to encourage volunteers to assist in providing Christmas gifts and lunch to those without housing in Surrey and White Rock.  As part of our asset delivery, the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation packed one hundred shelter food packs with a juice box, granola bar, seedless and easy to peel Chinese mandarin orange, chocolate bar and a mini cake loaf.  We delivered these food resources to the Lookout Emergency Aid Society's Front Room Drop-In Resource Center. They will allocate these food resources to clients who utilize their Front Room Drop-In Resource Center, forty beds in their Gateway Shelter and fifty beds in their Extreme Weather Shelter Program. Local RCMP and paramedics actively pick up and transfer vulnerable guests to Lookout's Extreme Weather, Gateway and Winter Boulevard Shelter Programs.

Many thanks to the Interfaith Food and Clothing Ministry and Lookout Emergency Aid for their dedication and generosity to our community. We feel extremely blessed for the opportunity to engage with the community in such an important way, with children and families volunteering.  At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we believe that furnishing our students with positive and community based volunteer activities provide an essential part of their development.  We all help them grow into responsible and capable citizens.

A Kind Word from the Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation
Here at Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we are very gratified for the depth and breadth of community support.  We thank the Lookout Emergency Aid Society for providing us with a tour of their facilities and for giving us the opportunity to serve lunch to the guests of Surrey in the Front Room Drop-In Resource Center. Through our Youth Leadership Development Program, we have delivered over one thousand bag lunches to various shelters and charities in Vancouver and Surrey, B.C. Changing the Odds:  United Way Avenues of Change Invests $400 000 to Pave Brighter Future for Surrey Kids

Surrey, BC--One in three children in BC starts kindergarten with odds stacked against their success--in the classroom and later in life.  In Surrey's Guildford West neighbourhood, this number is worse:  it's almost one in two.

United Way of the Lower Mainland is determined to change these odds and ensure more children in Guildford West start school ready to succeed.  They announced an investment of $400,000 in Guildford West for the early childhood program called "United Way Avenues of Change."  A total of $1.2 million over the next three years has been earmarked for this initiative. These funds will act as a catalyst for the community and be used to implement neighbourhood-specific strategies tailor-made for the community to change outcomes for vulnerable children arriving from war-torn countries.

Strategies include:

  • Support on the Go--mental wellness support
  • Health Promotion Ambassadors--literacy outreach
  • Early Childhood and Family Check-in--a screening program that helps track children's developmental progress.

Vulnerable children are defined as those children who, without additional support, have a higher risk of struggling in school and in later life.  Research shows that many problems--such as poverty, homelessness, obesity, and crime--have their roots in the first years of life.  At the check presentation, the United Way told the audience and the press that many families in Surrey's Guildford West neighborhood are refugees from a camp in Iraq.  Their children are not school-ready due to trauma, and are therefore identified as vulnerable.

A child is considered to be vulnerable if he or she is unable to meet crucial developmental milestones, such as being interested in reading and writing, able to count, and able to concentrate.  They are children, who, without additional support, have a higher risk of struggling in school and in later life.

The two social service agencies that will deliver United Way Avenues of Change program are DIVERSEcity and Options Community Services Society.  Under the United Way Avenues of Change program, the Guildford West neighborhood has developed its own business plan that provides specific action strategies for how they will be able to help the children living there who are considered vulnerable.

"From the start, United Way Avenues of Change has been a deeply collaborative neighbourhood project," said Michael McKnight, President & CEO of United Way of the Lower Mainland. "We knew that in order to tackle a complex issue like child vulnerability, we needed to bring together people and partners at a local level who are passionate about ensuring children and families thrive. Research shows that children thrive when their neighbourhoods thrive."

The Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation will allocate funds to help these vulnerable children progress and assimilate into our elementary schools through our tutoring services at our community-based tutoring centers and online. We applaud the United Way of the Lower Mainland for their innovative and courageous approach to ensure children in Guildford get the best chance to succeed in life.  United Way supports children, families and seniors in need.  They are the leaders in our field developing partnerships, tracking progress, and bringing the right people together to initiate change.  We can spiritually hope for a better tomorrow and collectively we can do better.  Together we can all help families meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Amazing Tutors' Volunteers bring Compassion to the Lives of Others

When it comes to creating a culture of caring in Downtown Vancouver Eastside and Surrey, the Sufi Meditation Center and its volunteers lead by example.  With their support, the Amazing Tutor's Children's Foundation was able to serve a warm lunch at the Living Room Drop-In Center.  We worked in their commercial kitchen and served a warm plate of lentils, steamed rice, garden salad, and a piece of birthday cake to the neighbors and guests of the Downtown Eastside.  As our foundation offers opportunities to develop leadership skills to youth attending our programs, the Sufi Meditation Center and the Living Room Drop-In's leadership and contributions are an excellent example of people working together.

The Sufi Meditation Center is specialized in Mystic Sufi Whirling, Angelic Healing, Energy Therapy and Sufi Meditation Muraqabah.  Their goal is to promote mystical awareness through Sufi Meditation. Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there is not anyone who does not appreciate compassion and kindness.  Our host, the Lookout Emergency Aid Society, a charitable organization, opened the Living Room Drop-In Center in 1993 in the Downtown Eastside next to Oppenheimer Park.  As reflected in its name, the intention was to create a social space for people living in local SRO's who live without a living room or other common space.  Over the years the Living Room Drop-In Center evolved to offer thousands of life skill opportunities, leisure activities, social functions and food programs.  The minimal barrier program was designed to help protect its members who live with various mental challenges.  With up to 7,000 unique individuals accessing the programs in a single year, the Living Room has served as an inclusive community space for people in the neighborhood.  In order to align with Vancouver Coastal Health's 2nd Generation Strategy, the Drop-In is changing to become a community hub that provides a safe space offering socialization, an active resource for a broader constituency and offers referrals to health organizations, community partners, and services.

In October 2016 the Living Room was renamed the Powell Street Getaway, which now serves at a Vancouver Coastal Health funded Mental Health and Substance Use community resource center.  The Getaway offers a safe consumption site, peer-lead programs, meals, activities and supports for anyone who may need them.  The expansion of services is designed to create the space as a hub where many services are offered, with particular emphasis on supporting health referrals and outcomes.  Lookout staff actively refer people in need to the Connections Clinic, operated by Vancouver Coastal Health, which is across the street. These programs will continue Lookout Society's evolution to serve the changing needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized people in the Downtown Eastside.  The new Drop-in will have a greater health focus and include new programming for seniors, addicts, women, LGBTQ and aboriginal communities.

At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we are excited with Lookout's new challenge to re-make the Living Room Drop-in with the same inclusive and minimal barrier approach that they have had in the past, while offering more services and resources to help individuals make their way to a better future.  This is an incredible vision.  We encourage youth of high school age to become actively involved in positive activities and outreach throughout the Vancouver and Surrey community.  Amazing Tutors aspires to build an international youth community committed to discovering who they are and the power to make changes that they can implement.  Our Youth Leadership Development Program fosters the desire and capacity to affect positive change both in their communities and own lives.

The Youth Leadership Development Program is meeting the needs of youth by developing leadership skills.  The Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation focuses on charitable works, community service activities, education, fundraising, and organized sports. The importance of leadership is emphasized through education and teamwork. The Youth Leadership Development Program builds and instills confidence, cooperation, discipline, hope, and self-esteem.

Many thanks to the Sufi Meditation Center and Lookout Emergency Society for their long-standing dedication, excellence in customer service, and generosity to our community. We feel extremely blessed to have been given the opportunity by them to engage with the community in such an important way, and to have youth in the community volunteering.  At Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, we believe that providing our students with positive and community based volunteer activities is an essential part of their development growing into responsible and capable citizens.

We look forward to partnering together in the future. Together we create a world of caring and consideration in our community.

A Kind Word from an Amazing Student

"Amazing Tutors is one of my favorite places to be.  It is my favorite place because I have been excelling in my academic classes ever since I have started coming here and it has been two years already. It has been the most wonderful two years.  Now, let me tell you why Amazing Tutors has changed my life for the better.

It all started two years ago when I was in grade 8.  I had just come home to my dad talking about how he had met a representative of Amazing Tutors and had been informed that Amazing Tutors was opening a community-based tutoring center in Bear Creek.  My dad came straight home and told my mom about Amazing Tutors.  My mom instantly agreed because she knew how bad my math marks were.  She could not handle my marks anymore so she decided  to send my brothers and I to Amazing Tutors. On the following Monday we joined Amazing Tutors.  This is how I got to know about this friendly place.
Amazing Tutors has changed my academic life for the better.  My math is better and there has been some improvement in my academic classes.  When I first came to Amazing Tutors, I started off with a C+ in math and now I am getting A's and B's.  Meanwhile when I first started to come, I was getting a low B in English and now I am a grade 10 student who is taking an English 11 course.  Even though, I know taking an English 11 course will be challenging, I know Amazing Tutors will help me get through it.  I look forward to continuing my journey at Amazing Tutors and I also look forward to excelling in my work habits and study efficiency skills."        -- O. Khan, An amazing student

Amazing Tutors' Programs for Youth Provides Opportunities to build a Giving and Caring Community

At our Amazing Tutors Children's Foundation, our Programs for Youth instill in students a sense of bravery and resourcefulness by taking action for a better world.
